Aquatic Oligochaete Communities in Amazonian Streams, Saracá-Taquera National Forest, Pará, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Bevilacqua,Maria Silvina; Marchese,Mercedes Rosa; Felix,Rodrigo Weber; Leal,João José Fonseca; Barros,Marcos Paulo Figueiredo de; Bozelli,Reinaldo Luiz; Esteves,Francisco de Assis.
Abstract: The aim of this study was to analyze aquatic oligochaete distribution in relation to water column physicochemical variables, structural environmental variation, and predominant substrates in the preserved Amazonian streams of the Saracá-Taquera National Forest (FLONA Saracá-Taquera), northwest Pará, Brazil. Oligochaetes are widely used as bioindicators for monitoring aquatic environments as they are very sensitive to pollution and environmental changes. Physicochemical and structural variables were measured from 100 stream segments in order to understand the distribution of oligochaetes in Amazonian streams. Biotic samples were collected using Surber samplers in three of the most predominant substrate types in each segment. PERMANOVA testing...

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in a semi-arid, limestone mining-impacted area of Brazil Acta Botanica
Teixeira-Rios,Thaís; Souza,Renata Gomes de; Maia,Leonor Costa; Oehl,Fritz; Lima,Cláudia Elizabete Pereira.
The main goal of this study was to determine the diversity and activity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in an area degraded by limestone mining within the semi-arid region of Brazil known as the caatinga (shrublands). Near a limestone quarry, we selected two areas of caatinga (preserved and degraded) for study. The number of glomerospores did not differ significantly between the two areas. There was a trend toward the most probable number of infective propagules being higher in the degraded area. Twenty AMF taxa were identified in the two sampled areas, species richness, diversity and evenness being higher in the preserved area. Two species of Racocetra represent new records for the semi-arid region of Brazil. Glomerospore production and AMF species...

Commercial fish assemblages on New Caledonian fringing reefs submitted to different levels of ground erosion ArchiMer
Letourneur, Y; Labrosse, Pierre; Kulbicki, M.
A comparative study was conducted in two zones of the Northern Province of New Caledonia, one located windward (east coast) and the other located leeward (west coast). In each zone, three major sectors were investigated: fringing reefs close to areas of important mining activities, fringing reefs close to areas of moderate mining activities, and fringing reefs close to areas free of mining activities. In addition, on the west coast, fringing reefs close to areas of high natural ground erosion were also studied. Only commercial fish species sensus late were censused on a total of 163 stations, concerning 165 fish species. Substrate characteristics were not different between zones and sectors. However, significant differences were observed for living...
